So here's the scoop on the Ayam Cemani. They originated from Indonesia and they are known for having mystical healing powers because of their black hyper-pigmentation. If you want to get scientific, Ayam Cemani is a melanistic breed, which means it has an overdevelopment of melanin or natural skin pigment. The dark black/shimmering green feathers can turn purple in the sun making this one of the most intriguing breeds of chicken in the entire world.

The eggs of an Ayam Cemani have been touted as some of the most nutritious eggs a chicken can lay!
In the first year an Ayam Cemani hen might lay 3 eggs per week. Although some people may claim they lay less (and they can), I've found that allowing the chickens to be free range will allow them to eat more which in turn allows them to lay more. So, if your Ayam Cemani isn't laying as much as you think it is, maybe open up the coop and let them stretch their legs, eat some bugs and seeds and see what happens. The egg color of this breed is a light peach/pink color and the size of the eggs isn't too big compared to other breeds. The Ayam Cemani hens are very friendly with humans and other pets as they'll come up to me first when I'm out throwing corn or mealworms to the flock. |
